Do you struggle with cutting onions?
Do you struggle with cutting onions?
We have a real love hate relationship with onions. A pretty common vegetable that we cut day to day but they can really make you tear up.
Did you know that there is a quick and easy way to get a nice fine dice on these bulb vegetables? Try these simple steps next time you are dicing an onion for a fragrant mince base or to use in soups.
Our 4 Simple Steps
Step 1:
Take each side of the onion off the top and bottom. Peel if needed, then slice the onion in half from top to bottom. Do not cut the onion, side to side as this will cause the layers to fall apart easier.
Step 2:
Now you have two halves of an onion. Lay the onion flat with the base of the onion (bottom) facing away from your knife. You will make small horizontal slices from the top of the onion (so if it was still standing upright). These slices will not go through the whole way. You want to stop before the base so the onion stays in tact.
Step 3:
With layers of horizontal cuts now made. You will turn the knife and slice the onion from the top down making slices the opposite direction. Again, do not make these cuts the full width. You must leave the base of the onion in tact. This step will leave you with small columns in the onion.
Step:4
The final step is the fun part. With the you cuts made, rotate the onion to dice as you would. Start from the opposite side to the base and make small slices. At this step, a fine dice will fall off the onion as you slice, due to the cuts made in the earlier two steps. Once left with the base of the onion dice that as you normally would.
