It can if it's left wet. Carbon steel isn't stainless, and that's the trade-off for an edge this sharp. Wash it by hand, dry it properly, and put it away dry in your sheath. Do that and you'll never have a problem.

Avoid getting it wet. Keep it out of direct sunlight. Make sure your blade is clean and dry before it goes back in. If the leather ever feels dry, work in a little leather balm with a cloth. Go easy, it takes less than you'd think.
